I've seen this in a few places, including Becca's, Wil Pfiefer's, and RAB's.

The Rules

1. Pick one film to represent each letter of the alphabet.

2. The letter "A" and the word "The" do not count as the beginning of a film's title, unless the film is simply titled A or The, and I don't know of any films with those titles.

3. Return of the Jedi belongs under "R," not "S" as in Star Wars Episode IV: Return of the Jedi. This rule applies to all films in the original Star Wars trilogy; all that followed start with "S." Similarly, Raiders of the Lost Ark belongs under "R," not "I" as in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Conversely, all films in the LOTR series belong under "L" and all films in the Chronicles of Narnia series belong under "C," as that's what those filmmakers called their films from the start. In other words, movies are stuck with the titles their owners gave them at the time of their theatrical release. Use your better judgment to apply the above rule to any series/films not mentioned.

4. Films that start with a number are filed under the first letter of their number's word. 12 Monkeys would be filed under "T."

5. Link back to Blog Cabins in your post so that I can eventually type "alphabet meme" into Google and come up #1, then make a post where I declare that I am the King of Google.

6. If you're selected, you have to then select 5 more people.

These aren't necessarily favorite movies; they're mostly the first films that came to mind as I typed.

A- The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
B- The Bride of Frankenstein
C- Caddyshack
D- Dust Be My Destiny
E- Ed Wood
F- The Fisher King
G- Good to See You Again, Alice Cooper
H- Head
I- I Walked With a Zombie
J- Juno
K- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
L- The Lady from Shanghai
M- Maisie Gets Her Man
N- North By Northwest
O- O Brother, Where Art Thou?
P- Pulp Fiction
Q- The Quick and the Dead
R- Ravenous
S- Snatch
T- The Taking of Pelham One Two Three
U- Under the Cherry Moon
V- Videodrome
W- Whale Rider
X- Xanadu
Y- Yellow Submarine
Z- Zorro, the Gay Blade. Ha-HA!

Nobody selected me, so I'm not selecting anybody else...if you want to do this, though, leave me a comment telling me you did!

On a geeky note, I think I'd have to disagree with one little bit of rule #3 there: if you look at the logos on original movie posters from 1980 and 1983, respectively, it's fairly clear that the movies are titled Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi, just like the Lord Of The Rings and such. ;-)

I knew other people's lists would reveal choices I'd be annoyed with myself for not remembering on my own list: in this case The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, one of my very favorites AND a film I rewatched not two weeks ago!

Also, how have I gone this long without ever seeing Good to See You Again, Alice Cooper?

It's only been out on DVD for 2-3 years now- it's half really good Billion Dollar Babies tour footage, with really lame wannabe Monkees-style comedy skits in between.

One Two Three is one of my absolute favorite movies, and it's only been about five years ago that I finally got around to seeing it...

For what it's worth, most of the location filming for Pelham was done within walking distance from my building and I know all those locations well, so if you're ever in NYC you're welcome to a walking tour of same.

(One location that's a little bit further away is the subway station entrance where the police assemble to go into the tunnels -- and where the Mayor is headed -- which was the subway entrance closest to the offices of Marvel Comics back when I worked there. Though Marvel wasn't located there when the film was made; they've moved around a lot over the years.)

An extra treat for NYC viewers is that the geography used in the film is pretty scrupulously accurate, i.e., we can follow the action and agree that if you were going from this spot to that spot, you would go up the streets shown in the film; they even get the direction of traffic right. This is very rare in films depicting New York, even the ones shot on location.
